Currently : The status of the UN peacekeeping forces is as follows:
There are currently 12 UN peacekeeping operations around the world, with a total of about 87,000 personnel, including troops, police, and civilians1.
The UN peacekeeping budget for the period from July 2021 to June 2022 is approximately $6.38 billion1, which covers 10 of the 12 operations, as well as logistics and support for other missions.
The UN peacekeeping missions are mandated by the UN Security Council and the General Assembly to help countries transition from conflict to peace, by providing security, protecting civilians, facilitating political processes, and supporting human rights2.
The UN peacekeeping forces face various challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, complex and volatile environments, attacks by armed groups, and limited resources3.
The UN peacekeeping forces also have many achievements, such as supporting peace agreements, disarming combatants, facilitating elections, and empowering women4.

History Of The UN Peacekeeping Forces :
The UN Peacekeeping Forces are a group of international military and civilian personnel who are deployed by the UN to help resolve conflicts and maintain peace in different regions of the world. The history of the UN Peacekeeping Forces dates back to 1948, when the first peacekeeping mission was authorized by the Security Council to monitor the ceasefire during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War1. Since then, the UN Peacekeeping Forces have taken part in more than 70 missions around the globe, some of which are still ongoing2. The UN Peacekeeping Forces have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1988 for their contributions to the realization of one of the fundamental tenets of the UN2. The UN Peacekeeping Forces have evolved over the years to adapt to the changing nature and challenges of conflicts, from observing and monitoring to peace enforcement and peacebuilding3. Some of the notable peacekeeping missions in the history of the UN Peacekeeping Forces include:
The First UN Emergency Force (UNEF I), which was deployed in 1956 to address the Suez Crisis between Egypt, Israel, France, and the UK4.
The UN Operation in the Congo (ONUC), which was launched in 1960 and was the first large-scale mission with nearly 20,000 military personnel at its peak2.
The UN Protection Force (UNPROFOR), which was established in 1992 to protect civilians and humanitarian workers in the former Yugoslavia during the Balkan wars2.
The UN Assistance Mission in Rwanda (UNAMIR), which was created in 1993 to assist in the implementation of the Arusha Peace Agreement between the Rwandan government and the rebel forces, but failed to prevent the genocide of 19942.
The UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL), which was set up in 1999 to support the peace process and disarmament of the warring factions after a decade of civil war2.
The UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), which was established in 2005 to support the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended the second Sudanese civil war2.
The UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), which was deployed in 2004 to restore security and stability after a violent uprising that ousted the president, and later assisted in the humanitarian response to the 2010 earthquake2.
The UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), which is the largest and most complex peacekeeping operation currently in operation, with over 20,000 personnel and a robust mandate to protect civilians and support the political process2.
The Authorization Process Through Which The UN Peacekeeping Forces 2024 Are Authorized To Provide Safety And Security To Prevailing Populations In The Palestinian Territories Of The Gaza; The West Bank; And, Holy Site Of Jerusalem : Noteably :
The Security Council determines that deploying a UN peace operation is the most appropriate step to take, based on the situation and the request of the parties involved.
The Security Council adopts a resolution that sets out the operation’s mandate and size, and details the tasks it will be responsible for performing.
The Secretary-General appoints a Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) to lead the operation and report to the Security Council on its progress and challenges.
The Department of Peace Operations (DPO) and the Department of Operational Support (DOS) work together to plan, recruit, train, equip, and deploy the peacekeepers and civilian personnel for the operation, in consultation with the host country and other stakeholders.
The peacekeeping operation works in accordance with the basic principles of UN peacekeeping, which are consent of the parties, impartiality, and non-use of force except in self-defence and defence of the mandate.
For the specific case of the Palestinian territories, the Security Council has not yet authorized any UN peacekeeping operation as of 2024. The current UN presence in the region consists of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), which monitors ceasefires and assists other UN missions; the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which provides humanitarian assistance and protection to Palestinian refugees; and the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO), which supports the peace process and coordinates UN assistance to the Palestinians.
Summary : Modern Era UN Peacekeeping Statutory Authorization :
The UN Peacekeeping Forces were created by the General Assembly Resolution 1000 (ES-I) and 1001 (ES-I) in 1956 to secure an end to the Suez Crisis and to supervise the cessation of hostilities, including the withdrawal of the armed forces of France, Israel and the United Kingdom from Egypt1. This was the first armed peacekeeping operation, known as the First UN Emergency Force (UNEF I)1. Since then, the UN has deployed more than 70 peacekeeping operations around the world, based on mandates from the Security Council2. The legal basis for peacekeeping is derived from the UN Charter, especially Chapter VI (Pacific Settlement of Disputes), Chapter VII (Action with Respect to the Peace, Breaches of the Peace and Acts of Aggression) and Chapter VIII (Regional Arrangements)3.
